Kindergartner suspended for Mohawk haircut

What is going on with today's educational system?? I was reading an article on msnbc.com today about this 6 year old boy who's mom refused to get his hair cut differently and the school suspended him for having "distracting hair".

Are you kidding me??

Since when is it ok to suspend someone for choice of haircut? What about their education?? I get that he's in kindergarten, and he's young, but a good education needs a good foundation to grow on. That's what kindergarten is about a strong foundation.

At least that's what it should be about.

Now, I'm not saying the school was the only one wrong in their decision making. It was the third warning the young man's mother had received, and if she really wanted her son enrolled in that school she should have complied with their wishes. Instead it seems she made his faux-hawk the center of a faux-controversy.

Cut your kids hair if your school requests it.

And don't suspend a kid for his hair cut... especially if he's only 6!

That Toddlin' Town

Can you name that tune?? That's right, it's Chicago. Frank Sinatra made it quite popular back in the day, and I had to learn it for school back in, oh I don't know, the third grade-ish?

Anyway, I thought of it becasue the second line of it it:

"Chicago, Chicago I'll show you around"

As it turns out, I'll be showing Ruby Red around the toddlin' town mid-March!! After a whole lot o' e-mailing yesterday/today, we've got plane tickets!!

Now to start planning the rest....

My Grandma...

Lately more then ever, I seem to think about my grandma. She passed away when I was 14 and was my only grandparent still alive at the time; which means in November I will have lived half of my life without a grandparent. Today I was talking with a coworker and somehow we got on the topic of grandparents and I was telling her about how sassy my grandma was. It reminded me of something in my past. I was maybe around 12 and I had asked my grandma if she and my grandpa had a song. She said they had and when I asked her what it was, she said it's 'I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You'. We laughed about it, but I always wondered if it was really a song or if she was being funny.

So today, I google'd it.

It's a song. Here are the lyrics:

I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You

I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!
When you dead in your grave, No more women will you crave.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

I trust you in my home, you rascal, you.
I trust you in my home, you rascal, you.
I trust you in my home, You wouldn't leave my wife alone.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

I fed you since last fall, you rascal, you.
I fed you since last fall, you rascal, you.
I fed you since last fall, Then you got your ashes hauled.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

You asked my wife to wash your clothes, you rascal, you.
You asked my wife to wash your clothes, you rascal, you.
You asked my wife to wash your clothes And something else I suppose.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

You know you done me wrong, you rascal, you.
You know you done me wrong, you rascal, you.
You know you done me wrong, You done stole my wife and gone.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

You asked my wife for a meal, you rascal, you!
You asked my wife for a meal, you rascal, you!
You asked my wife for a meal, And something else you tried to steal.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

Please don't me find you, rascal, you.
Please don't let me find you, rascal, you!
Please don't let me find you 'Cause you'll leave this world behind you.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

Ain't no use to run, you rascal, you.
Ain't no use to run, you rascal, you.
Ain't no use to run, I done bought a Gatling gun,
And you still having your fun, you rascal, you!

I'm gonna kill you just for fun, you rascal, you!
I'm gonna kill you just for fun, you rascal, you!
I'm gonna kill you just for fun; The buzzards gonna have you when I'm done.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

You done messed with my wife, you rascal, you!
You done messed with my wife, you rascal, you!
You done messed with my wife, And I'm gonna take your life.
I'll be glad when you dead, you rascal, you!

I found a couple of clips of it on youtube, but they're not very clear... but Louis Armstrong sang it as well as a couple of others, so if I can find it somewhere I'll post it.

Cardio Theatre Part 1 - Across the Universe

So, for those of you who don't know, the Murfreesboro Athletic Club (MAC) has this awesome thing called the Cardio Theatre. It's a dark room that has only some red lights so you can see what you're doing and the cardio equipment is tiered like a movie theatre. It's my favorite place in the MAC. Sometimes they have great movies to work out to like Rudy or Hoosiers and sometimes not so much (sometime this week they're playing Where The Heart Is). Well, I love movies so I like that I get to watch things that I wouldn't normally rent, AND get a good long workout to top it off!

Well, this is a clip from the movie that was playing on Monday night. It was really interesting and I think I may rent it to decide how I really think about it. I thought I'd share this clip though, as I thought it was really well done.

Oh, the movie is about a group of people during the protests of the Vietnam War and is a musical using entirely songs of The Beatles... interesting...

Random Thoughts (by MJ)

So, there are some things I've been thinking about lately.

1. I'm probably not going to do the 3-Day walk for breast cancer. You have to raise $2,200.00 per person to do it, and it just intimidates me too much. Maybe sometime in the future, but not this year.

2. I'm still working out a good budget. Patty C gave me a great budgeting program for my computer when she fixed my laptop and I'm still working things out, but I think it'll be good.

3. Once I work out my budget, I'm gong to see where I can cut some things out. About $35 worth of cutting out. I think I want to join the MAC again. I really liked working out there, and I really want to go back. (It will mean giving up going out to eat pretty much permanently...)

4. ¿Donde esta mi reembolso? I'm getting my tax refund back tomorrow!!! I just did them on Saturday... I think this is the fastest I've seen the government work! SWEET =0)

5. This election year is really intriguing to me... I'm enjoying watching/reading news on all of the primaries and debates going on in the country. I think... no... I know this election year is huge. It is the determination on the future of the USA.

It Kind Of Snuck Up On Me, Revisited (The Lent Blog)

I've decided what I'm giving up for Lent this year:
Going out to eat.
So there you have it.
I think I'll miss sushi with Rachel
(and sometimes Jackie and sometimes John) the most.
